What is incontinence?

Incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine. Although incontinence is typically associated with advancing age, it is not a fact of aging.

As muscles weaken it can be difficult to control the flow of urine, which leads to incontinence. A variety of medical conditions and medicines can also lead to incontinence. Pregnant women often experience incontinence.

For many women, incontinence is a source of great shame and embarrassment. Fear of accidents can seriously curtail active lives. How we feel about incontinence can be complicated by stigma and fear of aging. It is no different; however than any other treatable condition.

If you have difficulty with incontinence it is important that you discuss it with your doctor or healthcare professional to rule out any major health problems. Although the subject may be difficult to broach, bring it up. You will be surprised to learn that there are a variety of effective treatments available today. One may be right for you.

You may also be surprised to learn that many women are dealing with incontinence. You are not alone and you need not hang your head.

Take a proactive approach to take back your life. Some suggestions:

Strengthen your pelvic muscles with Kegel exercises. To identify the appropriate muscles, interrupt the flow of urine in mid-stream. Exercise these muscles as often as possible throughout your day.

Dress appropriately. There are a number of undergarment products that are discreet and provide the protection you need to stay on the go.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Keep a journal. Are there patterns that you can identify? For instance does leakage always occur with a particular event?

Know where to find the bathroom. When you are out, accidents are likely to happen if you have to take time to find the bathroom.

Go now. Don’t wait until you feel pressure. Time bathroom trips so that sneezes, coughs or laughter don’t result in leakage.
