Shock therapy treatment has come a long way from being reserved for zapping unruly "mental patients". Used today for both minor and major applications, shock therapy treatment is more commonly used for tendonitis, post heart attack precautions, and yes, even brain damage. Better known today as shock wave therapy, this set of methods is still like other therapies and is based on predetermined, proactive and positive goals, which provide for the betterment, maintenance, and/or overall mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being of the severe pain patient, the cardiac arrest patient, or the brain damaged patient.
Still following a typical standard mission statement, shock therapy treatment will include two types of treatment goals-the functional outcome and the enabling goals. So, for example, the functional outcome goal (which pinpoints the intended abilities that come as a result of the therapy) might be that the client/patient be able to sit, stand, and move without pain (or with minimized pain). In the same respect, the enabling goal will identify how the therapist will help the patient/client reach the defined outcomes. In the case of the man with calcific tendonitis, for example, the therapist or practitioner might plan to administer a measured amount of mechanical shock wave that will meet the short and long term goals of pain alleviation.
Great importance is placed on the character of such goals-whether they are short or long term, whether they are individual steps taken or final landing steps at the end of the shock therapy treatment period. So in the case of shock therapy treatment, the goals are expected to be reachable, to have positive results that positively affect the life of the client, to be relevant and reflective of what the client needs, and to have a measurable standards. This is important in shock therapy treatment especially, because emphasis must be placed on whether the treatment will temporarily reduce inflammation, alter mechanical functionability, or require additional therapies.
