Information on Fish Oil and Health

In today’s market, there are an abundance of nutritional supplements and dietary aids available for purchase. These products can be a great way to supplement your healthy eating habits, but it can sometimes be hard to understand which supplements are right for you. And a type of supplement that we hear a lot of information about today is fish oil. So it is a good idea to get the right information on fish oil and health.

A good source for information on fish oil and health is the Mayo Clinic. Doctors there have done extensive research about the information on fish oil and health. According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic: “Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil and certain plant/nut oils. Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Evidence from several studies has suggested that amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), lowers blood pressure slightly, as well as reduces the risk of death, heart attack, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known heart disease. However, high doses may have harmful effects, such as an increased risk of bleeding. Although similar benefits are proposed for alpha-linolenic acid, scientific evidence is less compelling, and beneficial effects may be less pronounced.” (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fish-oil/NS_patient-fishoil).

So what does this mean for you? In short, research has shown the fish oil can help keep your arteries healthy, lower your blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart attack.
