| Each parent eagerly awaits the appearance of the first tooth pushing earnestly through little gums. We celebrate the loss of baby teeth with shiny silver coins left by the tooth fairy around 5 or 6 years later. Teeth figure prominently in our lives. They impact our eating habits (and are impacted by them in turn); they impact our profiles as well as our smiles and the way we see ourselves. Given their importance, it is a wonder that teeth do not garner more importance in our daily routines. Although most of us understand the importance of flossing and brushing we neglect these tasks or perform them inefficiently. Many of us would count visits to the dentists among our least favorite activities. As the old saying goes, “ignore your teeth and they will go away.” Good oral health care must be an ongoing commitment if we hope to fight tooth decay, tooth loss and toothaches. These are not inevitable conditions and each is easily avoided. A healthy smile can last a lifetime but there is some effort involved.
